I find myself curious while setting up a bleach campaign for a small portion of my group members, how do you break canon? No matter what you do, if you play a game in an established setting, you're going to play it differently from canon. So how do you (and your groups) do it? My group isn't happy if we aren't the main characters (Incidentally, we also don't like playing buff-placing support characters), though this doesn't mean we won't play OCs, by and large, we prefer altering established characters.
We have a few rules in our campaigns, and they lead to memorable campaigns (Sentient planets in star wars and collapsing the galactic mafia completely are just two examples). First, everyone plays a canon character. Sounds boring, but it gets fun from there. You want to be Keigo, or Ichigo? Go ahead. Extremely powerful characters, or established end-bosses (Captains, Vizards, Ulquiorra) are not allowed in most campaigns, as we start at low levels in episode 1 of the anime/movie/comic/etc. Next, that player makes one major and one minor change to the character. Take Ichigo for instance. One Major change might be to make him become a fullbringer before meeting Rukia (and thus not getting Shinigami powers). Another might be to have him fuse with his inner hollow (Thus taking Oldblood: Hollow at 1st level, and eventually developing a resurreccion or similar powers early on. He might even be an Artificial Arrancar). A minor change might be to make him a girl (this is only minor because it [probably] would have a minimal effect on his character and the storyline. Changing Anakin Skywalker into a girl would have a vastly different effect, as that would insure Luke and Leia Skywalker are never born), or to alter Zangetsu into an elemental zanpakuto. Minor changes can have major mechanical impact, but should more or less have minimal roleplaying impact, though this rule isn't set in stone. From there, you can develop the character as you see fit, trying to emulate the character early on before changes ripple further and completely transform them. (Ahsoka Tano was one of the final characters played in my star wars campaign, and while she started out close to canon in personality, the ancient sith lord in her head and her constantly changing alignment between good and evil eventually made her very similar to canon Darth Revan, a grey jedi if there ever was one).
So how do you interact with canon, people of the board? Playing the Next Generation, playing OCs that eventually overshadow the main cast? What's your style?
