Hey, guys and gals! I wanted to start off by saying, I'm new to the Bleach D20 Classless system, but I've been having a lot of fun with what I've gotten out of it so far! Keep up the good work, developers and contributers!
Nonetheless, I do have a question that I'd like to ask of people who have a bit more experience with this game than me; it's not a rules question, so I don't think this is out of its section, but rather, more of a modulation question.
What I'm wondering is, for those of you with experience, does it change the feel of the game too much to lower everything down a few levels? Ignore, momentarily, the fact that your characters may feel like they're catching up to the powerhouses too quickly; after all, this is something that can be corrected simply through a modified experience system, and it doesn't really get to the crux of the issue. Mainly, do you think it's still possible, with proper feat-building and presentation by the GM, to make Captains, Espada, other high-rankers, and even regular opponents all just as impressive-seeming when scaled back a few levels?
The main reason I'm asking this is, after reviewing the two Character Compendiums (which were, admittedly, rather built around characters from the author's own campaigns, and thus at appropriate levels for that game) I noticed that it seemed almost mandatory for Captains to be in the Epic levels, even if narrowly, while powerful non-Captain characters were on the cutting edge of pre-Epic. If that were all to get toned way down, would it still be possible to make satisfactory characters like those in the series? And would they still be able to have the impression of great power, given that the PCs would likely also be lower-level in this scenario?
For more specifics, I was thinking of having the Captains be in the, say, levels 13-16 range, with the Espada, former Captain Visored, and high-ranking Sternritter Quincy all falling in at roughly those levels too. This would of course, put Lieutenants and Numero and such in the 10-11th levels at the very most and probably usually a little lower. Would characters of those ranks built to those levels be able to keep their image, or would it be underwhelming? And if those characters could maintain their stronger image, how would you go about building some of them to maintain their impressiveness?
(For the moment, I'm ignoring characters of Yamamoto and Aizen's prowess; part of the entire reason for me bringing this up is that those two are characters I feel truly should be the ones with access to "Epic" powers)
