The wilds of The Rukongai are a harsh and unforgiving places for those souls that choose to reside there. Of course, it’s seen as an appetizing alternative to the higher numbered districts. In district 75, a fire started, catching quickly and spreading to the neighboring districts, it took some time for the Shinigami to even respond. By this time, mass rioting and murdering had been reported among the fire, requiring force in addition to aid, a cooperative operation between Squads 4 and 11. Among these riots was one soul, armed with a massive zanbatō, who was murdering with reckless abandon as if he were a monster from the 80th district that once plagued the soul society. Intrigued by this notion, The Kenpachi himself investigated, coming upon the feral swordsman that could swing a sword larger than even the great warrior himself with seemingly no effort.
As the two clashed, it seemed to be a storm of swords and flame, the battle raging with such ferocity that it eventually quelled the flame in the district they fought, as well as those neighboring. By the end, Zaraki stood over his defeated opponent, hungry for more, but seeing that this untrained foe was spent, along with the fire that had once blazed around the two of them. Seeing the same look in this young soul’s eyes that he shared with the Kenpachi, Zaraki decided to bring the soul back to The Gotei 13, intent on grooming him to be the new Kenpachi, and give the old warrior somebody who could truly give him the fight he needed.
Upon his being brought to the Soul Society, Tenchi, who has little recollection of his time in the soul society prior to the fire, but a distinct memory of his living life, was enrolled into The Shinigami Academy, and eventually would make his way into The Gotei 13, carrying the title of Kenpachi, though not the station. In an attempt to separate the two to the best of their ability, Tenchi was placed in Squad 10, under the more even-headed Hitsugaya, rather than Squad 11 as requested by Zaraki. The reason for this being that the Captain-Commander suspected that Zaraki would intentionally attempt to instigate Tenchi’s powers with flame, in a Shinigami who displayed similar spiritual potential to himself, risking two monsters who could truly destroy The Soul Society if they fought.
Through experimentation, they found that fires which were created by Soul Energy, or used Soul Matter as fuel, were often more potent in enhancing Tenchi’s power, whilst the fires of the mortal world did less. Keeping this in mind, Tenchi was sent on the mission in the world of the living, knowing that if he were to become a monster, it would be simpler to stop him.
